Jan Koster

January Koster ( born July 8, 1945 in Delft) is a Dutch linguist. He is a professor of linguistics at the University of Groningen.

He studied at the University of Amsterdam, where he, after he visited MIT in 1976, received his doctorate in 1978. Before he moved to Groningen in 1986 he was a lecturer at the University of Amsterdam and Utrecht University, and Adjunct Professor at the University of Tilburg.

By Henk van Riemsdijk and Jean -Roger Vergnaud Koster was one of the founders of GLOW, the largest European organization Generative linguistics. He was co-founder and editor of The Linguistic Review, and is co- editor of Studies in Generative Grammar.

He specializes in theoretical syntax and the history of linguistics. He has made significant contributions to theories of word order, the locality and anaphora.
