Jan Mostaert

January Mostaert (* 1475 in Haarlem, † 1555 ) was a Dutch painter.

Life

Mostaert came from a famous family of painters and learned the craft in his home town of Haarlem. In 1504 he became court painter to Margaret of Austria, regent of the Netherlands. He accompanied his patron on their travels, visited Italy and acquired some Italian motifs. But mainly he kept in the older stem of the Netherlands, as his most famous work, the triptych " Cross" in Brussels, shows. He painted many portraits and fantasy scenes from the New World. He died in Haarlem, where many of his works were destroyed by fire in 1576.
