Life and work

Jan- Ole Gerster was born in 1978 in Hagen, Westphalia. After completing his community service, during which he trained as a paramedic, he moved in 2000 to Berlin, where he made an internship at the production company X Filme. He called ahead forty times, until finally invited him for an interview. After half a year of internship, he was then as a personal assistant of Wolfgang Becker on its hit film Good Bye, Lenin! involved.

The end of 2003 a study began Jan- Ole Gerster then in the areas of writing and directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. During his studies he made ​​several short films and wrote together with Wolfgang Becker for the omnibus film Germany 09 the script for the episode Sick House.

2010 started Jan- Ole Gerster working on his graduation film, the comedy drama Oh Boy with Tom Schilling in the lead role. In July 2012, the award-winning work at Filmfest Munich celebrated its premiere. There, Jan- Ole Gerster also won the New German Cinema Award for Best Screenplay. Accompanied by numerous very good reviews, the film was released in Germany, where it reached more than 300,000 viewers on 1 November 2012. In the German Film Prize 2013 Oh Boy won six awards, including those for best feature film, best screenplay and best director.
