Jan Rubes

January Rubes (actually Jan Ladislav Rubeš, born June 6, 1920 in Volyně, Czechoslovakia, † June 29, 2009 in Toronto, Canada ) was a Czechoslovak- Canadian opera singer in the bass and voice actor.

Life

Rubes made ​​his stage debut in 1940 in Prague as Basilio in The Barber of Seville and remained the leading bass singer of the Opera until his emigration in 1948. During the same year he had represented as winners his country successfully at the International Music Festival in Geneva.

In 1949, he was - at that time a member of the Royal Conservatory Opera - co-founder of the Canadian Opera Company and belonged to her as a performer and 1989 at over 1000 performances on. From 1974 to 1976 he was the tour director of the COC. Rubes sang games in six languages ​​and became a permanent member of the ensemble of the Opera Festival Company, from which the COC was born. As a solo singer, he gave concerts in Canada and New York, in Frankfurt and in Central America.
