Jan van Goyen
January Josephszoon van Goyen (* January 13, 1596 in Leiden, † April 27, 1656 in The Hague) was a Dutch landscape painter.
In addition to Salomon van Ruysdael and Pieter de Molyn Jan van Goyen is the main representative of the so-called tonal landscape painting that developed in the late twenties of the 17th century.
His main works are outfitted with safe and tense, perspective diagonal to the horizontal of the horizon ausspielende compositions. This, as well as be more economical in the more mature works of paint, the inclusion of the translucent painted surface and its restriction to an almost monochrome palette, make his paintings unique in the sheer volume of outstanding Dutch landscape painting of the 17th century.
