Jan Wagenaar

January Wagenaar ( born October 25, 1709 Amsterdam, † March 1, 1773 ) was a Dutch historian.

January Wagenaar devoted himself initially to the trade stand, but then historical studies. He died on March 1, 1773 as town clerk of his native city.

His most famous work is De Vaderlandsche history (Amsterdam 1749-60, 21 vols ), which extends to 1751 and from others (Amsterdam 1788-1810, 52 vols ) was continued until 1802. For this work yielded Jacobus Houbraken numerous engravings

In addition, are to mention his depictions of the United States of the Netherlands ( Amsterdam. 1739, 12 vols ) and description of Amsterdam (ibid. 1760, 3 vols ). Despite great prolixity and lack of intellectual penetration of the substance, this work has yet by faithful and simple presentation today (1889 ) still value.
