Janata Dal

Janata Dal is a political party in India, which has split from the Janata Party.

It was formed in 1988 after the Janata Party was involved in the so-called Bofors scandal in a corruption scandal. In November 1989, the Janata Dal won elections and put in a coalition with several smaller parties, Vishwanath Pratap Singh as prime minister. The coalition collapsed in November 1990.

The Janata Dal was able to make two more prime minister. From 1 June 1996 to April 21, 1997 Deve Gowda time officiated and 21 April 1997 until March 19, 1998 Inder Kumar Gujral. Both were withdrawn after a relatively short time the confidence of the Congress Party, which had supported initially these candidates.

In the following years, some groups of the party split over again from, the Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal the ( United) and the Janata Dal ( Secular ).
