Jendayasittich ( Aratinga Jandaya )

The Jendayasittich ( Aratinga Jandaya ) is a species of parrot from the genus of macaws ( Aratinga ). It is native to Brazil.

Features

The Jendayasittich reached a size of 30 centimeters. Head and throat are yellow. The upper breast is orange. The front end and the eye area are often red. Abdomen, flanks and under wing-coverts are orange - red. The edges of the green lower back feathers are red. The outer webs of primaries, the primary coverts and secondaries which are blue. The tail top is olive green with blue tips, the base of the tail as well as the hand - and secondaries are black. To the whitish Iris runs a black eye ring. The beak is black and the feet are gray. The juvenile birds of the head is pale yellow with occasional green feathers. The iris is dark.

Dissemination

The distribution area extends north-eastern Brazil from northern Goias Maranhao and Piaui over until after Ceará, Pernambuco and Alagoas.

Habitat

The Jendayasittich inhabited the tree-lined Caatinga - steppe, grubbed-up areas and the border areas of rain forests and coconut plantations.

Way of life

His way of life in the wild is so far little explored. It is usually individually to observe in pairs and in small flocks 10 to 15 birds. He is not shy and his screeching makes him very noticeable. Its flight is swift and direct. He often flies low to the ground and suddenly changes direction. Especially during the flight, his reputation is very shrill. The incubation period is probably from October to January. A nest was discovered in a high, rotten tree. The eggs have the dimensions of 28.4 x 22.6 mm. The food is vegetarian and consists of seeds, berries, fruits and corn.

Status

The population size of Jendayasittichs is unknown. It is fairly common, the size of the subpopulations is uneven. Although the habitat extends through the forest clearings, the stock is due to the illegal pet trade back in some areas. The IUCN classifies it the category is not at risk ( least concern ).
