Jane Marcet

Jane Haldimand, married. Marcet ( born January 1, 1769 in London, † June 28, 1858 ibid ) was an author of popular science books.

Her parents were the wealthy banker and merchant Antoine -François Haldimand and Jane, nee Pickersgill. Frederick Haldimand was her great-uncle. In addition to William Haldimand they had other brothers with whom she was educated by private tutors. In 1786 she made a trip to Italy.

In 1799 she married Alexander Marcet, with whom she had three more children next to Francis / François Marcet.

She attended Humphry Davy's chemistry lectures and decided to give their newly acquired knowledge to a wide audience easily comprehensible. New friends she was with the writer Maria Edgeworth.

1819 the couple moved in Swiss hamlet Malagny (municipality Genthod ), where she frequented with Augustin- de Candolle Pyrame and Auguste Arthur de la Rive. After the death of her husband in 1822, she returned to England.

Your popular scientific works in the form of dialogues between the governess Mrs. B (probably based on Margaret Bryan ) and the young girls Emily and Caroline were extremely successful and also awakened Michael Faraday's interest in science. Your books inspired Harriet Martineau economic.
