János Martinek

Janos Martinek (* May 23, 1965 in Budapest) is a former Hungarian modern pentathlete, the 1988 Olympic champion in the individual and in the team competition.

Martinek was with the team from Honvéd Budapest 1986 Hungarian team champion for the first time, in 1987 he won also the individual ranking. At the 1987 World Championships, he won together with László Attila Fabian and Mizsér the title in the team standings in the individual competition, he made ​​it to number 14

At the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, he was riding in the fifth and in fencing he lost only against Laszlo Fabian. After Martinek sixth fastest runner was, he had at the end with 5404 points, 25 points ahead of the Italian Carlo Massullo. Together with Fabian and Mizsér he also won the team classification with a clear lead on the Italians.

1989 defended Martinek along with Fabian and Mizsér the title of the world champion team. 1994 succeeded Martinek another title win in the relay competition introduced in 1989. In this World Cup Martinek won third in his only individual medal at a World Cup.
