Tributes

The literary critic Miklós Szabolcsi wrote: Pilinszky is related to those who have encountered in the solitude of fascism and which has since been suffering from the meaninglessness of life.

Imre Kertész, Nobel Prize for Literature in 2002, paid tribute to him in his speech: The real problem with Auschwitz is that it happened and that we can not change anything with the best but also the worst, will change this fact. The Catholic Hungarian poet János Pilinszky has this difficult situation perhaps most accurately referred to, as he called it a "scandal"; and so he said quite clearly the fact that Auschwitz has occurred in the Christian culture and thus is insurmountable for the metaphysical spirit.
