János Vitéz (bishop)

Johann Vitez (* 1408 in Sredna at Križevci, Croatia; † August 9, 1472 in Esztergom, Hungary, Croatian Ivan Vitez od Sredne, Hungarian Janos Vitez de Zredna ) was a Croatian humanist, from 1445 Bishop of Oradea (now Oradea, Romania ) and from 1465 Archbishop of Gran (now Esztergom, Hungary). His father was Dénes of the Zredna (Croatian Dionizije od Sredne ) in Slavonian county Bjelovar- Križevci. His nephew was Janus Pannonius.

Life

Johann Vitez visited the University in Zagreb and later the University of Vienna in 1434. He first worked as a clerk in the office of the secret Hungarian King Sigismund active and there rose to the Assessor. In 1438 he was curator of Zagreb. In 1440 he was one of the embassy, which Wladyslaw I. Krakow submitted the choice conditions.

In 1443 he became provost in Wardein (today Oradea ). As a relative of John Hunyadi he took during his reign the education of his children. In 1445 he became bishop of Wardein. As chancellor of the Regent and later King Matthias Corvinus was entrusted him with numerous diplomatic tasks. In 1465 he became archbishop of Esztergom (Gran ).

In the same year he founded at the behest of Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary, Universitas Istropolitana in Bratislava the. His nephew Janus Pannonius he had to study in Italy. Subsequently, he promoted him to the bishopric of Pécs.
