Janusz III of Masovia

Janusz of Masovia (Polish Janusz III Mazowiecki, * 1502, † March 10, 1526 ) was from 1503, when Janusz III, next to his brother Stanislaus († 1524), Duke of Mazovia and ( until 1518 under the regency of his mother). 1524 sole ruler. He came from a noble family of the Masovian Piast dynasty, whose last male representative he was.

Life

Janusz was the son of Duke Konrad III. († 1503) and the Lithuanian nobles Anna Radziwill († 1522). When his father died in 1503, inherited Janusz and his brother Stanislaus Czersk areas around and through the support of King Alexander and the Duke of Mazovia throne, but due to the young age of the regency was handed over to the widow of Konrad, Duchess Anna.

In 1518, both brothers attended the wedding of King Sigismund with the Italian princess Bona Sforza. As a loyal vassal of the Polish crown Janusz took with his brother on the rider war 1519-1521 part against the Teutonic Order.

In 1518 he took over his brother formally assumed the regency over the Duchy by his mother. They shared in common the regency until the death of Stanislaus in 1524. However, Janusz survived his brother by only two years and died already in 1526.

With him the line of the Masovian Piast dynasty died out in the male line and the Duchy of Masovia was drafted as a completed fief by the Polish crown.

Marriage and Family

Duke Janusz was never married and died childless. He was laid to rest in St. John's Cathedral in Warsaw.
