Janusz Lewandowski

Janusz Lewandowski (born 13 July 1951 in Lublin ) is a Polish economist and liberal politician. He was Sejm deputy of the first, third and fourth term, and the Polish Ministry of Privatization. From 2004 to 2010 he was elected Member of the European Parliament, on the list of the Civic Platform ( Platforma Obywatelska, PO). Since 2010 he is member of the European Commission, where he is responsible for Financial Programming and Budget.

Biography

Professional and scientific activity

Janusz Lewandowski studied economics at the University of Gdansk, 1974 MA, 1984 Ph.D. in Economics. He taught at the University of Gdansk 1974 until 1983. Afterwards, he was employed by the Polish Ocean Lines. Lewandowski has lectured at Harvard University and founded in Gdansk, the Research Institute for Market Economics ( Instytut Badań nad Gospodarka Rynkowa ).

He was an employee of major Polish magazines.

Political activity

Janusz Lewandowski 1980-1989 economic adviser to the " Solidarity" trade union. In 1988 he was co-founder of the Liberal - Democratic Congress, a Party to the Gdansk liberals. He was Minister of ownership transformations in the governments of Jan Krzysztof Bielecki (1990-1991) and Hanna Suchocka (1992-1993) and Sejm deputy of the first cadenza ( 1991-1993). After the electoral defeat of his party in 1993, he worked from 1994 to 1997 as an expert among others abroad. He was elected to the Sejm of the 3rd cadenza from the list of Democratic Union and 2001 to the Sejm of 4 cadence from the list of the newly formed Civic Platform in 1997. Lewandowski is a member of the Board of the Civic Platform.

From April 2003 to April 2004 he was an observer at the European Parliament. In the European elections of 2004, he was elected with 79 879 votes in the European Parliament. He was two and a half years as chairman of the Budget Committee. In the European elections in Poland in 2009 he was re-elected with 107 529 votes in the European Parliament. In November 2009 he was nominated as Commissioner for Financial Programming and Budget in the Barroso II Commission and took office on 10 February 2010.
