Japan Foundation

The Japan Foundation (Japanese国际 交流 基金, Kokusai Koryu Kikin, dt " Endowment for International Exchange" ) is a Japanese cultural institution whose mission is the promotion and dissemination of the Japanese language and culture. It can be regarded as a Japanese counterpart to the German Goethe Institute.

The institution was founded in 1972. On 1 October 2003 it was transferred to the Japanese Foreign Ministry and is thus part of foreign cultural policy of Japan. To promote cultural exchange between Japan and abroad Events are organized and offered language courses through the branches abroad. The Japan Foundation decreases the most common test for knowledge of Japanese, the JLPT.

The Japan Foundation is represented with 21 offices in 19 countries. Headquartered in Tokyo. There is also an office in Kyoto.
