Japanese giant perch (Lates japonicus )

The Japanese giant perch (Lates japonicus ) is a large predatory fish, which is found in southern Japan. The rare fish was detected in the Tosa Bay in the prefecture Kōchi on the island of Shikoku and Kyushu in Miyazaki Prefecture.

Features

It is up to 130 centimeters and can reach a maximum weight of 33 kg. From barramundi (Lates calcarifer ), whose distribution area is adjoined to the south, the Japanese giant grouper differs by a higher relative to the length body, a third dorsal spine that is longer than the pelvic fins. The second fin spines of the anal fin is longer than the third ( vice versa for Lates calcarifer ). The pectoral fins are supported by fin rays 16 (17 o 18 in Lates calcarifer ).

Full-grown Japanese giant groupers are colored gray with a bluish or silvery sheen, lighter on the belly, with black fins and deep red eyes. Juveniles are dark brown with two pale yellow longitudinal bands.
