Japanese plane

Kanna (Japanese刨) is the Japanese word for planing, in the strict sense are so traditional Japanese planes meant.

Woodwork is mostly natural in Japan and their surfaces are planed. Therefore, the Kanna is an important tool for the Japanese carpenter and the last tool for the completion of a workpiece. Kanna for final planing so smooth that grinding is not necessary, it can be removed chips up to about 3 /100 mm thickness. There are about 300 different Kanna, including many special tools.

With Kanna is planed in contrast to the European planing to train. The Japanese carpenter takes as a support for the workpiece often an inclined downwards " Planed beam " on which the workpiece is held only by an iron nail.

On adjusting mechanisms (as in some European Planing ) is deliberately omitted. The iron is to be fitted very precisely in the cuboid timber body of the planer and clamped only by the friction of iron in the mouth. The plane is adjusted by the craftsmen according to their own preferences itself, so there is usually not to buy ready-made Kanna.

The iron is adjusted using short strokes of a hammer, to reduce the depth of cut on either end of the iron in order to increase the depth of cut, or to the rear top edge of the planer.

The Japanese iron planer are slightly conical, and very thick, so that oscillations are well damped. They are made of high-quality, hard carbon steels. Therefore, the cutting may only be wet sanded.

There are also modern versions with replaceable blades, however, have little more than the outer shape in common with the actual Kanna.
