Japanese rock garden

Kare -san- sui (Japanese枯 山水, dt " dry landscape " or涸 山水" parched landscape "), even Kasansui (仮 山水"fake landscape " ), Furusansui (故 山水"old landscape " ) or Arasensui (干 泉水"dry pond ") is a Japanese rock garden, a special type of Japanese garden. This often colloquially called Zen garden in the German garden form is also referred to as "dry garden " or "dry landscape garden " because it consists only of gravel, stones and boulders. With the exception of no moss plants are used. Water is indicated by wavy structures in gravel or sand.

Both the rake of rock gardens by Zen monks as well as the consideration of the Kare -san- sui considered part of the meditation.

Elements

Line pattern

Curved lines that are drawn in the gravel or sand with wooden rakes, more or less deep and wide, usually symbolize natural structures such as streams or other bodies of water. It is important that as no beginning or end of the lines can be seen. The pattern should be designed so that the lines merge, and the stone settings can be highlighted. There are also gardens with strict geometric patterns.

Stones

The arrangement of the stones should not be any geometric shape result, quite in line with the random structure of nature. Also, one should avoid an even number. It is usually five or seven stones that are grouped or placed separately. The water lines should flow around the pre-placed stones. The variant to draw out the lines in the sand and then place the stones does not correspond to the image of nature.

The effect of the garden of Ryoan -ji in Kyoto could be based on the only seemingly random arrangement of stones according to recent research.

Miniature

Zen garden miniatures, which are used for relaxation and to invite to the playful meditation, are recent developments. They usually consist of a rectangular frame in which coarse to fine-grained sand and stones are colored or semi-precious stones. This includes usually a small wooden rake, with the sand surface can be structured.
