Jaqaru / Kawki is a language in Peru, which belongs to the Aymara Aru - language family. It is spoken in the districts of Tupe and Catahuasi in the province of Yauyos in the department of Lima.
Jaqaru [= Jaqi aru ] means " human language" Kawki other hand, " where? ". In the Jaqaru language, both terms are equally used as a self-designation. Linguists use the two terms, however, to distinguish between two language groups:
- Jaqaru is spoken in Tupe and the surrounding villages ( Aisa and Colca ). It has more than 3,000 speakers, almost all next to speak Spanish, many of whom have migrated to Lima.
- Kawki is spoken in the neighboring communities Cachuy, Canchán, Caipán and Chavín. There are only a few old speakers (9 persons in early 2005 ).
The ISO 639-3 code is JQR.
