Jarmo Wasama

Jarmo Wasama ( born December 2, 1943 in Elimäki; † February 2nd 1966 in Tampere ) was a Finnish professional ice hockey player who played during his playing career for Ilves Tampere.

Career

Jarmo Wasama played from 1960 to 1966 in the highest Finnish League for Ilves Tampere. He won with Ilves twice the Finnish Championship, a silver medal and two bronze medals. Wasama was elected five times to the All- Star of the Finnish Championship. In 1965 he was selected by journalists as the best player of the Finnish Championship. On February 2, 1966 Wasama died in a road traffic accident. His jersey number 2 has been banned from Ilves and more forgiving to any player.

With the Finnish National Hockey Team, he participated in three World Cups and an edition of the Olympic Games (1964). Overall, he came up with 74 inserts in the Finnish national team. 1985 Wasama was inducted into the Finnish Hockey Hall of Fame.

The Jarmo - Wasama Memorial Trophy, which is awarded by the SM- liiga annually to the best league Newcomer ( rookie ), was named after him.
