Jason Islands

The Jason Islands (Spanish: Islas Sebaldes name ) are an archipelago in the far north-west of the Falkland Islands.

The archipelago consists of seven islands and numerous cliffs and rocky islands with a total area of 21.7 km ². In Spanish, the islands again in a western group ( Islas los Salvajes ), consisting of Grand Jason Iceland and Steeple Jason Iceland, and an eastern group ( Islas las Llave ), consisting of Elephant Iceland, Flat Jason Iceland, South Iceland, North Fur Iceland and Seal Rocks, divided. The largest island is Grand (Jason ) Iceland with a length of 11.3 km.

The two western islands Grand Steeple Jason Jason Iceland and Iceland are privately owned. They were bought in the 1990s by New York philanthropist Michael Steinhardt and the Wildlife Conservation Society donated to protect the local fauna.

The islands are one of the main breeding areas for the Striated Caracara ( Phalcoboenus australis). In addition, numerous seabirds occur, such as the Subantarktikskua ( Stercorarius antarcticus ) or the Gentoo Penguin (Pygoscelis papua ).
