Jason Koumas in September 2007

Jason Koumas ( born September 25, 1979 in Wrexham, Wales) is a Welsh professional footballer who is currently Unemployed. Most recently, he played at Wigan Athletic. His surname he owes ancestors from the Greek part of Cyprus.

Club career

Koumas began his career in 1998 at Tranmere Rovers, where he also starred in the youth. After four years in Tranmere, he moved to West Bromwich Albion, the rise time in the English Premier League. In 2004, he signed a new contract in West Bromwich, but he lost under new coach Bryan Robson his place. Therefore, he moved the following year on loan in his Welsh homeland and signed for Cardiff City. The step should have been useful, because in his first match for Cardiff City he met after coming off the bench against Leeds United. The next year, the Welsh capital club negotiated with West Bromwich Albion on a final purchase of Jason Koumas. But this effort failed and so Koumas came back to West Bromwich. In the summer of 2007, he joined Wigan Athletic, where he played until the summer of 2010. On August 5, 2010 Jason Koumas moved again for a year on loan back to Wales. And again to Cardiff City in the Football League Championship.

National team career

Koumas played 34 internationals for Wales and scored 10 goals. A great tournament was denied him, however. In 2003, he failed in the relegation matches in the qualifying for Euro 2004 in Portugal to Russia. After the first leg in Moscow, Russia, he wrested a 0-0 draw with Wales, Koumas lost with Wales in Cardiff 0:1. In September 2009, he resigned from the national team.
