Jason Marsalis

Jason Marsalis ( born March 4, 1977 in New Orleans) is an American jazz drummer, vibraphonist and composer.

Life and work

Jason Marsalis is the youngest son of Ellis Marsalis and brother of jazz musician Wynton Marsalis, Branford Marsalis, Delfeayo Marsalis. Making his first appearance as a professional musician, he had at age 12 with his father. He studied classical percussion at Loyola University and then played with both mainstream jazz musicians (like his father ) and fusion - funk, Brazilian music (Casa Samba) and even in a band Celtic folk music. With trumpeter Irvin Mayfield and the drummer Bill Summers, he founded the fusion band Les Hombres Calientes. He also played a long time in a trio with pianist Marcus Roberts. In 1998 his debut album '' The year of the drummer. '' In recent times he led his own quartet, which he was more turned to the vibraphone.

In 2011 he was awarded as the other musicians of the Marsalis family, the NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship. In 2013 he won at the Downbeat Critic polls in the Rising Star category for vibraphone.
