Jasper County (Georgia)
The Jasper County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Monticello and was named after the home of President Thomas Jefferson.
Geography
The County is located in north-central Georgia and has an area of 968 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Morgan County, Putnam County, Jones County, Monroe County, Butts County and Newton County.
History
Jasper County was formed as the 34th county in Georgia from parts of Baldwin County on December 10, 1807. It was named after Sergeant William Jasper, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Jasper County 11,426 people in 4,175 households and 3,122 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 70.95 percent White, 27.26 percent Black or African American, 0.21 percent Native American, 0.16 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 0.61 percent from other races groups; 0.79 percent were descended from two or more races. 2.07 percent of the total population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,175 households out of which 34.6 percent have children under the age of 18 living with them. 56.8 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers and 25.2 percent were non-families. 21.4 percent of all households and 7.7 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.72 and the average family size was 3.14 persons.
27.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 7.9 percent between 18 to 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 24.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 11.8 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.
The median income for a household was $ 39,890, and the median income for a family $ 43,271. Males have a median income of $ 32,351, women $ 21,785. The per capita income was $ 19,249. 10.9 percent of families and 14.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
