Jasper County (Georgia)

The Jasper County is a county located in the state of Georgia in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Monticello and was named after the home of President Thomas Jefferson.

Geography

The County is located in north-central Georgia and has an area of 968 square kilometers, of which eight square kilometers of water surface, and borders clockwise to the following counties: Morgan County, Putnam County, Jones County, Monroe County, Butts County and Newton County.

History

Jasper County was formed as the 34th county in Georgia from parts of Baldwin County on December 10, 1807. It was named after Sergeant William Jasper, a hero of the Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Jasper County 11,426 people in 4,175 households and 3,122 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.2 males statistically every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 93.0 males.
