Jasper County (Illinois)

The Jasper County is a county located in the U.S. state of Illinois. In 2010, the County had 9698 inhabitants and a population density of 7.6 inhabitants per square kilometer. The the county seat ( county seat ) is in Newton.

Geography

The County is located in southeastern Illinois and is drained by the Embarras River. It has an area of 1290 square kilometers, of which nine square kilometers of water surface. At the Jasper County borders the following Nachbarcountys:

History

The Jasper County was formed on February 15, 1831 from parts of Crawford County and the Clark County and named for William Jasper, a sergeant and war hero of the American Revolutionary War.

The official sale of land to white settlers began on 7 April 1820.
