Jasper County (South Carolina)

Jasper County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Ridgeland.

Geography

The County is located in the extreme south of South Carolina, bounded on the southwest by Georgia, with its southernmost tip of the Atlantic Ocean and has an area of 1812 square kilometers, of which 113 square kilometers are water surface. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Hampton County, Beaufort County, Chatham County ( Georgia) and Effingham County ( Georgia).

History

Jasper County was formed in 1912. It was named for William Jasper, a Seargeant of the 2nd South Carolina Regiment in the American Revolutionary War.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Jasper County 20,678 people in 7,042 households and 5,091 families. The population density was 12 people per square kilometer.
