Jauja

Jauja on the map of Peru

Jauja ( 16,424 inhabitants) is the capital of the province ( 105,000 inhabitants) in the Peruvian region of Junín. The town lies in the valley of the River Mantaro at an altitude of 3,352 m, 45 km north of Huancayo.

After the conquest of Peru by the Spaniard Francisco Pizarro Jauja made ​​in April of 1534 the provisional capital of the Viceroyalty of New Castile. With the establishment of the new capital city of Lima, which has the advantage of being close to the port of Callao, by Pizarro in 1535 Jauja rapidly lost importance.
