Jaunjelgava

Jaunjelgava ( German: Friedrich Town) is a city in Latvia on the left bank of the Daugava River, it lies about 80 km southeast of Riga.

In the 13th century, it was an attachment of selenium, which was leveled by the Crusaders. Around 1450 were formed an estate and a settlement. 1590 gave Duke Friedrich Kettler of the city market law. At that time there were about 60 families in the transhipment of goods. 1621, the town was devastated in the Polish - Swedish War and founded in 1646 when Frederick city new. 1710 the plague raged in 1831 and 1848 cholera. In addition, there were several major fires in the city. Nevertheless, the city grew and was county town since 1795. After the opening of the railway line Riga - Daugavpils 1861, the waterway lost on the Dvina and thus Friedrichstadt important.
