Coaching career

Association

Aside from his coaching debut with the CF Atlante, which he has edited in the 1995/96 season, Aguirre always worked with the other three clubs over a longer distance. He had his first multi-year commitment to the CF Pachuca, which he has edited between 1998 and 2001 and with whom he won the Torneo Invierno in the season 1999/ 00, 1999. In 2001, he ended the cooperation with Pachuca, because the national team desperately needed him ( see below).

In 2002 he went to Spain and stayed there for almost seven years. First, he received a contract with CA Osasuna, which he kept not only before the descent, but continuously travel up into Europe. In the season 2004/ 05 Osasuna reached the final of the Copa del Rey, which was lost by a late goal from Dani in the 115th minute with 1:2 after extra time against Betis Sevilla. The following season, Osasuna played in the UEFA Cup, but already retired on the first lap with 1:3 and 0:0 against Stade Rennes. But one made in the Spanish championship sensation and ended the 2005/06 season in fourth place. This Osasuna had reached the Champions League qualification, in which one only on away goals (0-0 and 1-1 ) lost to Hamburger SV, but was allowed to start in the UEFA Cup and - in the knockout rounds over Trabzonspor, Girondins Bordeaux, Glasgow Rangers and Bayer Leverkusen - advanced all the way to the semifinals, where Osasuna lost to the league rivals and eventual champions FC Sevilla 1-0 and 0-2. But the fruits of his work garnered Aguirre no longer, since he had already been before the season 2006/ 07 committed Atlético Madrid. There he continued his successful work continued and led the capital club in the 2007/ 08 season also in fourth place and the Champions League qualifiers, where Atlético won through 0-1 and 4-0 against Schalke and then the group stage ( behind Liverpool, but before Marseille and Eindhoven ) unbeaten survived. The exit in the second round on away goals (2-2 and 0-0) against Porto did not live Aguirre already, since the relationship between coach and club management has recently been tarnished and it is therefore in February 2009 drew a line. The sources are contradictory, whether Aguirre was fired or his dismissal forestalled and resigned voluntarily. Having to December 2011, he was a year from November 2010 at Real Zaragoza under contract, he stepped end of November 2012 at Espanyol Barcelona over from Mauricio Pochettino.

National

When the Mexican national team was advised in qualifying for the 2002 World Cup in serious trouble, Aguirre was made quasi as " saviors " "overnight" for the head coach. In the decisive final group of CONCACAF were already completed five of ten matchdays and the Mexicans were after three defeats and a draw against bottom club Trinidad only in fifth place; far from it, to qualify for the World Cup 2002. What at that time hardly anyone believed possible, entered yet another: under Aguirre drove the team four wins and a draw ( the group winners Costa Rica ) and finished at the end of the second place, the person entitled to participate in the World Cup tournament. Aguirre's office as the coach began on 1 July 2001 against the USA ( 1-0) and ended 50 weeks later on 17 June 2002 in the championship round against the same opponent. Previously, Mexico unbeaten group winners ahead of Italy, Croatia and Ecuador had become. For Aguirre's whereabouts also spoke no more second place in the Copa América 2001, when Mexico - including a 1-0 victory over Brazil - reached the final, where they narrowly lost to the hosts Colombia 0-1. The World Cup resignation of the now again brimming with self-confidence Mexicans calculated against their arch-rivals USA ( 0-2) had the immediate dismissal Aguirre result.

Seven years later, Aguirre as a " knight in shining armor " was brought into a similar situation again. Once again threatened the Mexican national team in qualifying to fail and once again tore Aguirre - despite a 1:2 debut defeat in El Salvador on June 6, 2009 - the rudder around and led the Mexicans to the FIFA World Cup 2010 In addition, Aguirre won. July 2009, at that time only a month in office, the staged in the USA CONCACAF Gold Cup, where his " fate opponents " USA was defeated in the finals 5-0. With the progress made at the 2010 World Cup results dissatisfied (Mexico resigned again in the second round of ), put Aguirre office on 30 June 2010 low. He justified his resignation by saying, "I must go, that's the most honorable thing I can do .... We have not reached our goal of a carry on was not sustainable. . "
