During his military service Chevalier founded his first band, the Louisiana longshots, and had 1957 in Jimmy Dean's TV show his first major appearance. At this time he also made his first recordings for Cajun Records from Norfolk, Virginia. Gene Vincent had recently recorded his hit Be-Bop -A- Lula there and became friends with Chevalier. Chevalier's first single Rockin 'Roll Angel reminiscent of Vincent's echo effect and the " bubbling groove". 1959 Chevalier had his biggest hit. In Recco Records he recorded the record, The Ballad of Marc Elishe / The Ballad of Earl K. Indeed, Chevalier Long did not even know, and finally, the single sold over 100,000 copies in Louisiana alone. Beginning of the 1960s he took for gold ribbon Records and Pel Records on more plates before he went to Las Vegas in 1962.

Shortly thereafter, Chevalier took his Louisiana longshots to Las Vegas and together they entered the evening in the " Gold Nugget " on. For Crest Records a single was recorded and the Cotton -Town label released an album. In Las Vegas Chevalier also got an opportunity with the likes of Merle Haggard and Carl Perkins to work. In 1968, Chevalier Las Vegas for a few years, returned in 1972 to move back to Louisiana back to finally mid -1970s.
