Jay Laurence Lush

Jay Laurence Lush ( born January 3, 1896 in Shambaugh (Iowa ), † 22 May 1982) was an American geneticist, who is considered the founding father of scientific animal breeding research in the United States.

He studied at the Kansas State Agricultural College (now Kansas State University) with a Master 's degree in 1918 and in 1922 received his doctorate at the University of Wisconsin -Madison in genetics. From 1930 to 1966 he was a professor of agriculture at Iowa State University.

In 1968 he received the National Medal of Science in 1979 and the Wolf Prize in Agriculture. Since 1967 he was a member of the National Academy of Sciences.

His book Animal Breeding Plan from 1937 was very influential.
