Jay Van Andel

Jay Van Andel ( born June 3, 1924 in Grand Rapids, Michigan; † 4 December 2004) was an American businessman and founder of the direct -selling company Amway.

He was also a life long known for its religious and political efforts. At the time of his death in 2004, Forbes magazine estimated him with a personal fortune of U.S. $ 2.3 billion and thus ranked him on the list of the richest people in 231 place.

Amway

Van Andel had in common with Rich DeVos in 1959 co-founder of Amway. It was not her first professional adventure, because the two schoolmates ( sons emigrated Dutch ) started at a young age many professional companies together. They conducted a flight school, a drive-in restaurant (the first in Grand Rapids ) and the Yes -Ri Corporation, which sold vitamins and nutritional supplements. With the Ja- Ri Corporation, they had their first experience in network marketing, a way to build sales networks through personal contacts. Eventually, they took over this system idea establishing the Amway Corporation. Amway started as a family business, which provided for a work for people from home and initially only with a product, a biodegradable household cleaner (LOC ), entered the market.

The company is meanwhile to over 13,000 employees and more than three million independent business partners ( so-called Amway Business Owner, ABO) has grown. The parent company Alticor reported 2007 total revenues of U.S. $ 7.2 billion, with China as the largest market share. After the accusation that Amway was an illegal pyramid scheme, won the two founders in 1979 a four-year trial, paving the way for the new economy of network marketing.

In 1995, his son Steve Van Andel as the chairman of the Amway Corporation after his lifelong partner Rich back in 1992 ceded the presidency to his son Dick DeVos Amway.
