Jayachamarajendra Wadiyar

Jayachamaraja Wodeyar Bahadur ( born July 18, 1919 in Mysore, India, † September 23, 1974 in Bangalore, India ) was the 25th and last Maharaja of Mysore.

Life

Jayachamaraja Wodeyar was the only son of Yuvaraja Kanteerava Narasimharaja Wodeyar. He graduated from the local college and the school closed in 1938 with numerous awards and gold medals from. After that he went traveling around Europe, where he met many artists, and began studying at Oxford. In 1940 he succeeded his uncle Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV to the throne - his father had died in 1939 - and ruled until 1950, when India declared a republic and the princely states were finally incorporated into the Indian Union. Wodeyar received an annual financial compensation. He was given the position of a " Rajpramukh " part of the Mysore State until 1956., After the merger of the neighboring states, he was until 1964 the first Governor of the State of Mysore and later merged the State of Madras (now Tamil Nadu ).

Patron

Jayachamaraja was a great patron of the arts, culture, sports and the representative of Indian philosophy. He financed LP recordings by Russian composer Nikolai Karlovich Medtner and founded in 1949 Medtner Society. Medtner retaliated and dedicated to the Maharaja his 3rd Piano Concerto. Wodeyar was the heir to the throne and could no longer pursue his own ambitions of a career as a pianist. He now devoted himself to the Indian music and learned Vina. He wrote 94 Carnatic compositions. He funded the establishment of a yoga school and several temples. The Maharaja in 1945 Licentiate of the Guildhall School of Music and Honorary Member of the Trinity College of Music in London. In 1948, he was the first president of the Philharmonia Concert Society in London. He has received numerous honors, among others, Honorary doctorate in literature, philosophy and law. In 1966 he was elected a Fellow of the Indian Academy of Performing Arts.
