Jayavarman II.

Jayavarman II (* 770, † 9th century ) is considered the founding father of the Khmer empire of Angkor in Cambodia today. He may be identical with one of the historians as Jayavarman I. [No. 2] designated ruler who is attested by inscriptions in the years 770 and 781. Anyway, he married into a local ruling family of the Angkor region, which from the inscriptions of the temple of Preah Ko (K. 713 ) of 25 January 880 and Bakong (K. 826 ) of 881 /82 King Indravarman I (r. 877-889 ) shows. Jayavarman II himself has left no written records.

The dating of his new appointment to the year 802/ 03 only works on inscriptions of the 11th century under the kings Suryavarman I (reigned 1002-1049 ) and Udayadityavarman II (r. 1049-1067 ) back, claimed as different families of the Elite that their ancestors had occupied continuously since Jayavarman II certain offices. From the inscription of Sdok Kak Thom K. 235, February 8, 1053 we learn then from an imaginative but completely ahistorical history of the ruler, where among other things it is said that he had liberated Cambodia from the threat of a country "Java" which is not identical to the present island of Java with security, as it is called in all contemporary sources " Yava ". Here is behind "Java" obviously the old name for " barbarians ", which at that time ( 11th century ) is often the Vietnamese were meant. The alternatively called year 790/91 as the date of its commencement government goes back to the inscription K. 583 of Baphuon temple from the time of King Rajendravarman II (r. 944-968 ), is thus older than the date 802/ 03, but but considerably younger than the inscriptions of the 9th century, who know absolutely no date. The only match of the oldest and the later sources is that Jayavarman II on the Mahendraparvata ( modern: Phnom Kulen ) had settled.

( " King of the Gods " Devaraja, Sanskrit ) was established, as will be alluded to in the inscription of Preah Ko - 880, where, according to the Sdok Kak Thom inscription was the cult of the protective deity Kamranteng Jagat ta Rajya. With all the focus in many places encountered nonsensical assertion must be rejected, Devaraja denote the earthly rulers as " god-king ", as herein, the statements of the inscription clearly. Indravarman I. was inaugurated on January 25, 880 the "Memorial Temple " Preah Ko, which consists of six towers, the immediate predecessor of Jayavarman II and Indravarmans Rudravarman and Prithivīndravarman and their wives were built. All of these deceased rulers and their queens were given posthumous names, which pointed out that they or with Shiva, his consort Parvati were united. Thus, Jayavarman II was named Paramesvara, " Lord, Most High ", which is also a name of Lord Śiva.
