Jayavarman VIII.

Jayavarman VIII was a king of the Khmer from 1243 to 1295 in the Empire of Angkor.

Life

During his reign, he had to fend off several invasions by the Thai kingdom of Sukhothai.

Towards the end of his reign was the threat of the Mongols to one of his main concerns. 1280 called the ruler of Annam the Mongol ( Yuan Dynasty ), Emperor of China, Kublai Khan to help against the Khmer. The latter sent an army that could be beaten back just ahead of Angkor, Jayavarman VIII nevertheless, agreed to pay tribute.

Under his reign was a violent Hindu response to Buddhism, as he had been mainly propagated by King Jayavarman VII. This grew to an extent of a storm images - often one sees in the temples of Angkor scraped Buddhist representations, such as Ta Prohm and Preah Palilay. A Buddha statue that had been erected in the Bayon, was destroyed in the 1930s found in a well. In Bayon they had been replaced by a statue of Harihara. Construction activities are of importance VIII of Jayavarman 's reign, however, not known.
