Jaz drive

Iomega Jaz, even Jaz Drive, was a computer drive with interchangeable disk. Removable media, there were in the capacity 500 megabytes ( rare), 1 gigabyte and 2 gigabyte in the late 1990s. In contrast to the older iomega zip at the Jaz disks are used. A medium includes two plates, which are handled by four write heads in the drive. Also, the spindle drive in the drive.

Technically, the Jaz drive was similar to the removable drives the company Syquest, but higher capacity and additional features: A metal band on removable media closes at Jaz the interior with the plates dustproof, when the medium is removed from the drive. At the same time, the plates are blocked so they can not move during transport.

Jaz drives, there were internal ( IDE or SCSI port) and external versions. First, there were drives for media up to 1 gigabyte. Later drives were followed for media with 2 gigabytes. Apart from iomega compatible drives are also offered by APS and LaCie. Keyword: second source

A follow- drive with a similar technique is the iomega REV with up to 120GB capacity. The REV is not backward compatible with Jaz media.
