Jean Absil
Jean Absil Nicolas Joseph ( born October 23, 1893 in Bon Secours - in Hainaut, † February 2nd 1974 in Uccle / Ukkel in Brussels) was a Belgian composer.
Life
Jean Absil was an early student of music by Alphonse Oeyen and became the organist at the pilgrimage basilica of Saint- Quentin in Bon Secours ordered. From 1913 he studied at the Brussels Conservatory, among other things, composition with Paul Gilson. For his musical works, he was awarded the Prix de Rome and the Rubens Prize. With Florent Schmitt he formed a friendship.
He taught at the Royal Conservatory in Brussels and at the " Chapelle Musicale Reine Élisabeth ". In addition, he headed from 1922 to 1958, the Academy of Music in Etterbeek, which bears his name since 1963. Absil was a member of the Royal Academy of Sciences and Fine Arts of Belgium.
Style
Compositionally Absil formed a synthesis of the French school, the style of Stravinsky and Bartok, the polytonality, the atonal and serial music. His extensive oeuvre includes almost all genres.
