Jean-Baptiste Baudoin

Jean -Baptiste Baudoin ( born January 11, 1831 in June Ville, France, † November 15, 1875 ) was a French Catholic priest and missionary in Iceland.

Life

Baudoin and his compatriot Bernard Bernard (1821-1895) was the first Catholic priest who reached Iceland after the Reformation. They arrived in 1857 ( Bernard ) and 1858 ( Baudoin ) under the North Pole Mission ( 1855-1869 ) and built in 1864 a small chapel on the 1859 they purchase Hof Landakot near Reykjavík. However, all in all she and her projects a more than problematic state and while Bernard in 1862 left the country, Baudoin remained until 1875, without recorded greater success there.

Baudoin was his life on Iceland with controversy and hostility towards the Catholic Church has. In addition to numerous articles in magazines and newspapers, he also wrote a number of (smaller) books in Icelandic ( see the bibliography below), for example, the pamphlet entitled Jesus Christ is God, in spite of the opposition of Magnús Eiriksson (1867 ). which was aimed at a book of living in Copenhagen Icelandic theologian Magnús Eiriksson, which was entitled Is the Gospel of John an apostolic and true gospel and his doctrine of the incarnation of God and a true Christian doctrine? A religious- dogmatic, historical and critical examination (1863 ).
