Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot

Jean -Baptiste Camille Corot (* July 16, 1796 in Paris, † February 22, 1875 ) was an important French landscape painter. He is one of the main proponents of the Barbizon School.

Life

Camille Corot came from middle-class family. His mother was a successful milliner. Born in Paris, he first lived with a nurse in the country. After visiting a Parisian boarding school he attended high school in Rouen and served an apprenticeship as a draper. At age 26 he gave up the unloved business and pursued a career as an artist. He became a pupil of Jean -Victor Bertin, a main representative of the classical landscape painting. In 1825 he traveled to Rome and painted for three years in the Campagna Romana. Back in Paris, he moved into a studio in the Rue Voltaire. He went on journeys on foot through France, the Netherlands and Switzerland.

From 1827 he participated regularly at the Paris Salon. In 1846 he was appointed Knight of the Legion of Honour in 1867 as an officer. Corot is buried at the Père Lachaise cemetery in Paris.

His most important pupil was Camille Pissarro.

Especially in his later life devoted much of his attention Corot charity. His enormous commercial success he enlarged inter alia, through a sophisticated marketing concept of his works, he sat around in a wide range of social commitment. In the artistic milieu Corot mediated younger colleagues orders. Several times he donated large sums of money for the poor of Paris. 1872 Corot bought a home for the destitute and now blind Honoré Daumier. In 1875, he donated the widow of Jean -François Millet 10,000 francs, so that they could deny the upkeep of their children. In addition, Corot supported a crèche in the Rue Vandrezanne in Paris.

Performance

Corot was in Italy for his landscape painting with free, but tighter composition and subdued colors, which he developed after 1850 to a pure mood painting. Corot was one of the main representatives of the school of Barbizon, among others, also Théodore Rousseau, Charles- François Daubigny and Jean -François Millet belonged. In his later years he worked as Père Corot the father figure of the Parisian art scene and was considered the leading landscape painters of France. His contemporaries include William Turner and John Constable. In addition to the landscape painting Corot also created portraits of women.

Corot had influenced the development of Impressionism crucial. Several well-known painter appealed to Corot and called themselves his disciples about Eugène Boudin, Stanislas Lepine, Antoine Chintreuil, François -Louis Français, Berthe Morisot, Charles Le Roux and Barthélemy Menn.
