Jean-Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier

Jean -Baptiste Charles Bouvet de Lozier ( born January 14, 1705 the area around Pleudihen -sur -Rance, † 1786 in Saint- Malo ) was a French navigator and explorer.

Life and work

According to studies of navigation, he was a lieutenant in the French India Company 1731 Company of the Indies, Compagnie des Indes. In 1733 he proposed the Compagnie before an expedition which should consist of a frigate and a larger merchant ship to find in the South Seas land on which the own East Indiaman could find shelter and care options. Not exactly modest, he insisted to be made to the Governor of each of its future discoveries.

On July 19, 1738 he set sail from Aigle and Marie from Lorient to sea and headed to the Santa Catarina Iceland off the coast of Brazil. He arrived there in October, equipped itself again and left the island a month later with course southeast. In December, he stood at the 45th parallel, but sighted after days of fog nothing but an iceberg, later penguins, which he described as "duck similar, but with fins".

The end of December he was in the South Atlantic between icebergs, 1600 miles from any inhabited country. On January 1, 1739, at 3 clock in the afternoon took a "very high snowy country " out of the fog out. He thought it was a promontory of the southern continent and named it after the date of discovery, the Feast of the Circumcision of Christ, Cap de la circoncision.

After twelve days could not land and his team was attacked by scurvy, he went to the east, until he had to retire because of illness. He met on 24 February, a Cape of Good Hope and was on June 24, again in Lorient. His clients, he had to inform you that a southern continent must lie toward the poles and supply possibilities are therefore out of the question.

Although even disappointed with his ride, Bouvet was admired and honored. Twice, in 1750-1752 and 1757-1763, he was governor of Réunion and Mauritius from 1750-1756. The discover of his country was later called Bouvet Island; one of the northern cape of the island called Cape circoncision.
