Jean-Baptiste Louis Gresset

Jean -Baptiste Louis Gresset ( born August 29, 1709 Amiens, † June 16, 1777 ) was a French poet.

Life

His schooling completed Gresset on a run by Jesuit school in his hometown. After the obligatory novitiate he resigned on September 3, 1726 at the Society of Jesus ( Jesuits ). From his Order, he was then later sent to Paris at the Lycée Louis -le- Grand and for some time as a teacher at other schools of the Order ( Moulins, Tours, Rouen ). In 1730 he was successful in his debut with the ode " Sur l' amour de la patrie ". His literary breakthrough, he scored in 1734 with " Vert- Vert ", in which he elegantly and gracefully tells the story of an educated in a convent and later got into bad company Parrot.

With this poem Gresset was famous overnight throughout the country. Jean -Jacques Rousseau called Vert- Vert as " phénomène litteraire ". His medal was less sympathetic; According to official reprimand Gresset was sent to the Order of school to La Flèche ( Sarthe Dept. ) nor in 1734. The following year, he was ( to have been ordained without a priest ) then in October excluded from the Order. His Relegation commented Gresset with his poem Adieu aux Jesuites.

He went to Paris and turned there is always more to the theater. Known in the salons he was as a protégé of Mme de Pompadour soon became the darling of society. On March 25, 1748 French Academy appointed him as the successor of the late Antoine Danchet ( armchair 5). He himself followed in 1777 the cleric Claude -François -Xavier Millot on this place after.

An invitation of Frederick the Great to come to Berlin, refused Gresset. He married and went back to his hometown. There he led a very retired life. There he founded an Academy and its président was perpétuel. His reclusive and modest life there, commented Voltaire with the epigram " Gresset se trompe - il n'est pas si coup able". Gresset returned only twice to Paris: Jean Baptiste le Rond d' than Alembert (1754 ) and as Jean Baptiste Suard ( 1772) were enrolled in the Académie française, Gresset held one much-praised speech.

Gresset changed over time from libertine to conservative religious people. In 1759 he swore an open letter from his literary work early and left only apply his late pieces. Gresset died before his 68th birthday on June 16, 1777 in his home town and found his final resting place.

Reception

Gresset could repeat his outstanding literary success with Vert- Vert only with his play Le mechant or even outdo. The literary critic Ferdinand Brunière described this piece as " ... the best comedy of the 18th century " and placed it nor Alexis Piron Le métro mania. Charles Duclos arranged this play in their quality of play between Le petit maître (Pierre Carlet de Marivaux ) and Dangerous Liaisons (Pierre -Ambroise - Francois Choderlos de Laclos ).
