Jean-Baptiste Masse

Jean Baptiste mass (* 1700, † 1757 ) was a French composer and cellist.

Jean Baptiste mass belonged to the Ordinaires de la Chambre du Roi and was a member of the Vingt- quatre Violons du Roy and the Comédie Française. About his life little is known, as certain is that it was conducted in 1752 in the books of the Comédie Française as a cellist and double bass player.

Works

Mass has published five collections of sonatas, these include not only the works of Jean -Baptiste Barrière of the oldest French Sonatas for Cello and Continuo

  • Premier Livre ( 1736) with a dedication to the Messieurs les Comédiens Français
  • Second Livre, ( 1739 ) with a dedication to Monsieur de le Grange Gaudion Conseiller du Parlement
  • Troixièmme Livre, for two solo cellos without bass
  • Quatrièmme Livre, also for two solo cellos without bass

In the preface of the Third and Fourth collection mass explicitly points to an alternative occupation of bassoons, viols or violins.
