Jean Burger

Jean Burger ( born February 16, 1907 in Metz, † April 4, 1945 in Dora concentration camp ) was a French communist and resistance fighter.

Even before the Second World War, Burger joined the French Communist Party.

During the war he fell into German captivity. In 1941 he managed to escape from the POW camp Nienhagen on the Baltic Sea. He returned to France and took part here in the French resistance against the German occupation. In September 1942 he was arrested again. However, again he succeeded in December 1942 to escape. He built up a resistance group, which included up to 3,000 members. The Group operated propaganda distributed newspapers and leaflets, committed sabotage and helped escaped POWs.

On 21 December 1943 he was arrested again. He was successively detained in the concentration camps of Dachau concentration camp, Auschwitz and Buchenwald concentration camp. On April 4, 1945, he died in a concentration camp Mittelbau- Dora near Nordhausen.

Honors

The city of Magdeburg named a street in his honor as Jean- Burger Street. In the neighboring Lennéstraße a memorial stone was erected.
