Jean Fernel

Jean François Fernel also Joannes Fernelius (* 1497 in Montdidier (Somme ), France, † 1558 in Fontainebleau ) was a French astronomer and physiologist. He introduced the term physiology and first described the spinal cord.

In 1525 he led degree measurements to determine the circumference of the earth by having measured the meridian arc from Paris to Amiens.

He was the personal physician of Henry II and Catherine de Medici.

The lunar crater Fernelius was named after him in 1935.
