Jean-Frédéric Edelmann

Jean -Frédéric Edelmann (Johann Friedrich Edelmann, born May 5, 1749 Strasbourg, † July 14, 1794 in Paris) was an Alsatian harpsichordist and composer.

Life

Nobleman who came from a Protestant organ and harpsichord maker family, studied together with his friend Philippe -Frédéric de Dietrich, the son of his patron Baron De Dietrich, at the Protestant University of Strasbourg law and music. Nobleman who lived from 1774 to 1789 in Paris, initially in the house of Baron Bagge. He earned his living as a pianist and piano teacher, where he had, among other contact Christoph Willibald Gluck. His piano students included Etienne- Nicolas Mehul and Jean -Louis Adam.

At the beginning of the French Revolution nobleman was appointed in 1789 to the administrator of the department of Bas- Rhin and his friend de Dietrich to Strasbourg mayor. On July 14, 1794 Edelmann was guillotined as head of the Strasbourg Jacobins in Paris.

Work

Gentleman composed two operas, an oratorio " Esther " which was listed in 1781 at the spiritual concert, numerous arias for harpsichord, arias, as well as a number of collections of chamber music for harpsichord and accompanying instruments.
