Jean Gilles (composer)

Jean Gilles ( born January 8, 1668 Tarascon; † February 5, 1705 in Avignon ) was a French composer of the Baroque.

He was a pupil of Guillaume Poitevin and followed this from 1693 as head of the school choir of the cathedral of Aix -en- Provence. After that he worked in the cathedrals of Agde, Toulouse and Avignon as Kapellmeister.

Narrated exclusively religious works that are influenced by the Italian style and André Campra. From the pen of Jean Gilles come 15 " Grands Motets " and numerous Petits Motets in different occupations, a Te Deum (1697 ), several masses and other sacred compositions. He gained notoriety during his lifetime by his Requiem. During a period of more than seventy years it has been listed 15 times at the prestigious Concerts spirituels in Paris as well.
