Jean Guillou

Jean Victor Arthur Guillou ( born April 18, 1930 in Angers ) is a French composer, organist, pianist and music teacher.

Life

After autodidactic studies in piano and organ Jean Guillou at the age of 12 years organist at the church of Saint- Serge in his hometown of Angers. From 1945 he studied at the Paris Conservatory, where Marcel Dupré, Maurice Duruflé, and Olivier Messiaen were among his teachers. From 1955 to 1958 he taught as professor of organ at the Instituto de Musica Sacra in Lisbon ( Portugal).

After spending several years in Berlin (1958-1963) Guillou was appointed titular organist at Saint- Eustache in Paris in 1963, where he succeeded André Marchal.

As a concert organist and improviser Jean Guillou has appeared worldwide. In addition, he performs as a pianist who played the British and French premiere of a forgotten piano sonata of the Romantic era of Julius Reubke.

His involvement in organ building led to the design of several important instruments, as in the church of Notre -Dame -des- Neiges in Alpe d' Huez (1978, Kleuker ), in the Church Chant d' Oiseau in Brussels (1981, Kleuker ), in the Tonhalle in Zurich (1988, Kleuker / Steimayer ), the Conservatory of Napoli (2006, Tamburini / Zanin ), the Auditorio de Tenerife ( Blanca Fort ), the Sant'Antonio dei Portoghesi in Rome (2008, Mascioni ) and the Catedral, Leon ( 2013 Klais ).

In addition to his extensive work as a composer, which includes a variety of genres, Guillou has created numerous transcriptions of orchestral and piano works for organ. Among them are works by Handel, Liszt, Mozart, Mussorgsky, Prokofiev, Rachmaninoff, Stravinsky, Tchaikovsky and Vivaldi as well as organ versions of the Goldberg Variations and the Musical Offering by Johann Sebastian Bach.

From 1970 to 2005 Guillou taught master classes at the annual Zurich artistic organ playing and improvisation. Since 2007, this organ courses are continued in the Paris church of Saint- Eustache (2009 in Angoulême ).

Guillou is almost heard more often for concerts and Festival in Germany than in their own country. He is neither mainstream in terms of the traditions of organ playing, still a man of the Church - that makes him some suspect. Only in St. Eustache is the " Maitre " controversy for decades.

In 2010 he was chosen as the winner of the National Order of Merit of the " Knights of the Legion of Honor ", but refused Guillou acceptance on the ground, France give classical music too little attention.
