Jean Jacques Henner

Jean Jacques Henner ( born March 5, 1829 in Bern Weiler, Alsace, † 23 July 1905 in Paris) was a French painter of academic realism.

Life

Hailing from a family of farmers in the Sundgau Henner received first drawing lessons with Charles Goutzwiller (1810-1900) in Altkirch. Later he moved to the École des Beaux -Arts in Strasbourg to study at the studio of Gabriel -Christophe Guérin (1790-1846) painting. In 1846 he moved to Paris and was there at the École des Beaux -Arts a pupil of Michel- Martin Drolling and from 1851 by François- Édouard Picot. During this time, mainly working on portraits, which included his family and other people of his home in Alsace.

Funded by his teacher took Henner in 1858 in an exhibition of the Académie Française. With his " Adam and Eve find the corpse of Abel ", he won the Prix de Rome, with which a study stay at the Villa Medici in Rome was connected. Henner remained until 1865 in Italy and devoted himself chiefly to the study of the works of Titian and Correggio. During this time he specialized in the representation of naked female figures in scenic surroundings, whose outlines are blurred painted in semi-darkness or dim light.

After his return to Paris Henner devoted addition to these, mostly mythological female figures again portraiture. With its lifelike painting these portraits reached the audience of the fin de siècle great popularity. Today, many of his works at the Musée Jean -Jacques Henner are seen.
