Jean Jadot

Jean Jadot ( born November 23, 1909 in Brussels, Belgium, † 21 January, 2009 Sint- Pieters- Woluwe, Belgium ) was an Archbishop Curia of the Roman Catholic Church.

Life

Jean Jadot, who came from a famous Belgian noble family, studied at the Catholic University of Leuven. At age 21, he became his doctorate with a thesis on the philosophical mindset of Alfred Edward Taylor magna cum laude. On 11 February 1934 he was ordained priest. From 1934 to 1940 he was chaplain in Brussels, from 1939 to 1952, he worked as a chaplain in youth work and in the military chaplaincy. From 1952 to 1960 he was chaplain in the Belgian Congo, 1960-1968 Director of the Belgian work of spreading the faith.

He was by Paul VI in 1968. appointed Titular Archbishop of Zuri and appointed apostolic delegate to Laos, Singapore and Malaysia. He received his episcopal consecration on May 1, 1968 Léon- Joseph Cardinal Suenens; Co-consecrators were the Curia Bishop Silvio Angelo Pio Oddi and the Bishop of Namur, Marie André Charue.

In 1969 he was Apostolic Pro- Nuncio to Thailand. 1971 he was appointed delegates in Equatorial Guinea and the Pro-Nuncio in Gabon and Cameroon. Paul VI appointed him in 1973. for permanent observer at the Organization of American States in Washington, DC and Apostolic Delegate of the United States of America. In 1980 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II in the Roman Curia and appointed President of the Secretariat for Non - Christians. His resignation was accepted in 1984 by John Paul II.

Work

His work was influenced by Jacques Leclercq and the Benedictine ecumenicist Lambert Beauduin OSB.

Jean Jadot was instrumental in the construction of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States. In his tenure as deputy Vatican 103 new bishops and 15 new archbishops were appointed. He was highly respected by the progressive -minded American Catholics in the period after the Second Vatican Council; on his work towards appointed by Pope bishops had the nickname " Jadot boys".

Jadot was honorary canon of St. Rumbold's Cathedral in Mechelen. In 2006 he was awarded the " Hans Küng Rights of Catholics in the Church Award".
