Jean-Marie Guéhenno

Jean -Marie Guéhenno (* October 1949 in Paris) is a French diplomat and political scientist.

Life

Jean -Marie Guéhenno led the planning office politics of the French Foreign Ministry and was appointed Ambassador of the Permanent Council of the Western European Union in London. At the height of his career, from 2000 to 2008 Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations with the responsibility of "peacekeeping missions". He is still regarded as an expert on foreign policy issues, including as Associate Director of the Arnold A. Saltzman - Institute for War and Peace Studies at the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University. 1998 to 2000 he was president of the Institut des hautes études de défense national ( IHEDN ).

Since 2010, Jean -Marie Guéhenno is Chairman of the Board of the Swiss Centre for Humanitarian Dialogue. In March 2012 he was appointed Special Envoy of the United Nations and the Arab League for the UN Observer Mission in Syria ( UNSMIS ).

In Germany he became especially a name with his work The End of Democracy ( orig. La fin de la démocratie ). This questioned in provocative theses on the " end of the nation ", " end of politics " or the " Lebanisation the world," the democratic development of the late 20th century.
